VIVa Warriors Belfast – A Party On Another Level

Posted on Wednesday, 14th May, 2014 at 11:41 pm

On Easter Monday the new Belfast based promoter Moth took the city by storm with their flagship event at Titanic Quarter. They combined a perfect choice of music and venue along with flawless production and set up to create an unforgettable night that exceeded even the highest expectations.

Ahead of the upcoming Ibiza season, the VIVa Warriors brand made its much anticipated Northern Irish debut. Led by VIVa MUSiC boss Steve Lawler and fellow resident Anëk, with support from a host of local talent including Dale Hooks, Steve Boyd, Frederick Fringe, Deep City Groove, Garillo Dansek and Richie Blacker.

The event took place at the incredible venue of T13, a huge urban sports park, set in a former shipbuilding warehouse underneath the iconic Samson & Goliath cranes and just a stones throw away from the recently developed £100m Titanic building. Prime location and space! The sheer size of the warehouse was breathtaking in itself.

We arrived on site just in time to catch local hero, Dale Hooks on the warm up. By this stage the venue was filling up nicely and the crowd was already buzzing. Dale’s stellar performance covered a great range of tracks that got everyone prepped for what was to follow.

When Dale dropped “The Robbery” by Suara label boss “Coyu” (released on Tronic in 2013) the place went off! Such a powerful track with a nice groove, it was definitely one of the highlights of his set for me.

“Technasia – Bastille Days” (released on Ovum in 2012) was heavy rolling stuff as well with a trademark Technasia synth and an earth-moving kick drum that really did the business in the earlier stages of the night.

Another one to mention would be “Ida Enberg – Devil Dance”. Devil Dance was Ida’s debut on Crosstown Rebels and was released in March this year. A deep tech cut with a nice touch of acid which fairly lifted the crowd.

Dale played the “Mihai Popviciu Remix” of the old “Underground Resistance” classic “Transitions” as he passed over to Anëk. Hard to beat the original but this remake is actually really nice and was a great choice for the changeover. We got some good footage of the crowd during this one which was used in the recap video.

Next up was the amazing female duo, Anëk. Not only are they hugely talented DJs but they were also really good craic. Natural stage presence and crowd interaction, constant smiles and heaps of energy. They totally smashed their NI debut and we look forward to seeing them here again soon. The crowd absolutely loved their set!

They played the “Danny Daze Fundamental Remix” of the “Murk” classic “Darkbeat” and oh my… it was unbelievable! The whole crowd went nuts! Everyone in the warehouse was dancing and you could hear people singing… I’m addicted to drums and I’m a slave to the darkbeat! Such a tune! For me that was definitely one of my favourite tracks of the night.

This one from the Desolat family, “Marc Faraone – Overvision” also went down really well and you could tell the girls enjoyed spinning it. Karina gestured to the crowd during the build as Denise got ready to drop it and then both DJs and the whole crowd where literally bouncing and fist pumping the air. You can’t hear the main kick in on the soundcloud clip but anyone who was there or knows the track will know what I mean!

A track that will always be remembered from the night was one of their own and also our chosen track for the recap video, “Anëk – Come Out To Play” (released on VIVa MUSiC in September 2013). The original and the remixes from Santé and Philip Bader fit perfectly with the party as the vocals are taken from the 1979 film “The Warriors” which provided the inspiration for the VIVa Warriors brand. No doubt “Come Out To Play” will always be a trademark track for the parties.

As Anëk were about to hand things over to Steve Lawler, they brought things down nicely with this little beauty “Cristoph – Right Now” which was released on Defected last month. It gave the crowd a nice wee breather before the headlining act got started and brought things right back up again.

Steve Lawler needs no introduction. You would be hard pushed to find a more in-form, in-demand, exceptionally talented artist, regarded as highly by his industry peers as he is by his huge global base of musically educated fans. Steve Lawler was definitely a great choice of booking for Moth’s first event. He played an incredible set which was thoroughly enjoyed by fans and fellow DJs alike.

As expected Steve fully engaged the crowd from the outset. We have included a short clip of the raw footage taken during the first track he played so you can see for yourselves how it went down. I have been trying to get a track ID on this for the last few weeks to no avail. Great track so wanted to include it…

We were in for more drums with the next track… It’s the drums that get me… Kick, snare & clap… It could only be the Hot Creations hit,”Richy Ahmed feat Kevin Knapp – The Drums”. A hip-house barnstormer of a track with a smooth rolling bassline into a four-to-the-floor backdrop with contagious results.

Another killer track was “Audiojack – Machine Code (Paul C & Paolo Martini remix)” which was released on Gruuv last month. This one certainly got the floor grooving towards the front with all attention on the stage as Steve played and the Fire Angels performed.

Another stand out track was “Bruni & Danielle – Just Do it” which was the leading track on Yuma Factory Vol. 5 released December last year. This was a 100% crowdpleaser. Loads of our cuts for the recap video came from people dancing to this track. It really got everyone going… Give it all you got, give give, give it all you got… and so they did!!

Steve kept up the pace with this tech house bomb, “Aldo Cadiz & Oscar Barila — Satin (Emde & Julio Remix)” which was released on Highway Records in November last year. There was a real feel good vibe from this one with plenty of hands in the air and clapping going on from the front row right back.

BUY TRACK

Next was “DJ Pierre feat. Felicia – Come Together (What Is House) (Supernova 2013 Remix)”. This remix takes a deeper turn from the original and incorporates a hypnotic funky bass line, a pumping deep house beat and percussive samples. It mixed well with the previous track, Satin, and was really well received by the crowd. More great footage captured during this track!

Another crowd favourite was “Santé – Talking House” which was the first track on the “We Talk H.O.U.S.E” EP released last month on Avorte, the label Santé co-owns with Sidney Charles. Great bottom end and a Chicago born groove, reverb laden drums set the pace with that cherished kick drum cutting through the rolling bassline. Another top track of the night.

BUY TRACK

The final one to note is “Underworld – Dark And Long (Christian Smith Tronic Treatment Remix)”, another one from Tronic which was released n 2011. Christian Smith’s Tronic Treatment mix preserves the vibe of the original perfectly while adding a condensed but slow burning feeling of tension which explodes into the epic break we all know and love. The crowd absolutely loved this one.

Moth didn’t stop there though, in addition to the outstanding line up and venue, they also incorporated some additional performances throughout the night. The had some free-runners and professional BMX guys from Ramp Rage doing what they do best over at the ramps located down the side of the warehouse. Those guys were amazing! We got some great footage that can be seen in the recap video, back flips and all.

Last but by no means least, the beautiful Fire Angels who made several performances throughout the night. They accompanied the BMX guys on the ramps in the early stages of the night for an impressive show. They also joined the DJs at the front of the stage at various times through the night. Their performances included fire dancing, fire breathing and aerial hoops.

We hope you have enjoyed the review, and if you are recapping on the night, we hope it has brought back some good memories for you. Check out our gallery below. We managed to rip some decent stills from the footage. These images will all be added to our Facebook page soon so please like the Love UR music page so you can keep an eye on the uploads.

We would like to thank Moth for having us down to cover this event and of course the amazing DJs and crowd that made the video coverage so easy.
